Ten Competitive Pressure Chipping Drills

Here are ten competitive pressure chipping drills for your golf game. Let's start to make golf more competitive on the practice range.

1. Par-18 Short Game Challenge

  • Setup: Choose 9 different chip/pitch shots around the green (bunker, rough, tight lie, uphill, downhill, etc.).

  • Rules: Play each as a par-2 (chip + one putt = par).

  • Scoring: Total score out of 18. Compete with a friend or track your progress.

2. Up-and-Down Challenge

  • Setup: Drop 10 balls in various lies.

  • Drill: Play each ball as a mini-hole (chip + putt).

  • Scoring: Score 1 point for each successful up-and-down.

  • Goal: Get 7+ out of 10 to “win.”

3. Closest to the Pin Ladder

  • Setup: Set 5–7 targets at various distances and angles.

  • Drill: Hit one chip to each.

  • Scoring: 3 pts (within 3 ft), 2 pts (within 6 ft), 1 pt (within 10 ft), 0 pts (outside 10 ft).

  • Compete: Play solo or head-to-head.

4. Pressure Up-and-Down (3 Miss Rule)

  • Drill: Try to complete 5 up-and-downs in a row.

  • Twist: Miss 3 in total and start over.

  • Focus: Builds mental toughness and precision under pressure.

5. Par or Better Chipping Game

  • Setup: Set 6 chipping locations.

  • Drill: You get 2 strokes per location (chip + putt).

  • Scoring: Par or better = 1 point. Goal is 5+ points.

  • Compete: Solo or play alternate shot with a partner.

6. One-Club Short Game Challenge

  • Drill: Use only one club (e.g., 7-iron or PW) for 9 chips from different lies.

  • Scoring: Track up-and-downs or distance to the hole.

  • Purpose: Encourages shot creativity and touch with limited options.

7. Flop vs. Bump Game

  • Drill: For each shot, hit one flop and one bump-and-run.

  • Goal: Measure proximity or up-and-down success for each.

  • Compete: Alternate styles with a friend, award points for better result per shot.

8. The 3-Zone Landing Drill

  • Setup: Create 3 zones on the green (short, mid, long).

  • Drill: Try to land one chip in each zone on command.

  • Scoring: 1 point per successful zone. Miss = restart.

  • Compete: Time-based or points-based challenge.

9. Elimination Chipping Game

  • Setup: 5 chip shots from different locations.

  • Rules: Must get within 6 feet on each to “survive.”

  • Twist: Miss = eliminated. Start over at 1.

  • Goal: Survive all 5 in a row. Excellent pressure test.

10. 10-Ball Scatter Drill

  • Setup: Scatter 10 balls randomly around a green.

  • Drill: Play them all out (chip + putt) as quickly as possible.

  • Scoring: Total strokes for all 10.

  • Compete: Lowest score or fastest time wins.
