Booking an appointment

If you wish to book a session with me, please do so by clicking on the Book Now button. Alternatively, you can send me an e-mail at docpaulmccarthy@gmail.com or call me on the telephone. I will discuss the next steps with you and we can plan what is best for you. I will send an e-mail to confirm the appointment for an initial session and provide a map with general information about what to expect.

What should I expect at my first session?

The initial session is an opportunity for us to explore what goals you have and to agree a plan to help you meet these goals. In this initial session, I shall explain how my support works and answer any question you might have about the process. I recognize that meeting a psychologist for the first time can be challenging and uncomfortable; however, I shall do my best to put you at ease.

Most clients I meet in the initial session are happy to continue working with me. This initial session also gives you an opportunity to establish whether I am the right person with the right approach to support you. If you wish to meet another chartered psychologist, I would be happy to advise you further until we find one that suits you best. If you are happy to work with me, we can draw up a contract.

A contract with your chartered psychologist

This contract is not a legal document; rather, it is a document to see the terms of support you receive and the expectations you undertake. For example, a contract normally includes such things as fees, issues of confidentiality, and details about the number of appointments. I normally suggest we meet for six sessions and we can review progress after these six sessions. Although I suggest six sessions, you are under no obligation to attend for these six sessions - you are free to stop seeing me at any time. I only ask that you let me know if you do not wish to return. It is often helpful to meet for a final session to offer you suggestions about other forms of support or other chartered psychologists to support you.

Cancellation policy

The cancellation policy I use is to benefit you, other clients as well as my practice. As you can appreciate, I like to manage my diary so I adopt a strict cancellation policy that requires all clients to give at least 24 hours notice about any cancelled session. The full fee is payable if inadequate notice is given. I understand that life events often interfere with our best intentions so we can discuss the issue together.

I struggle to share my thoughts and feelings. What can I do?

Doing things for the first time can be challenging. But I'm sure you can think of many things you have done for the first time which have gone well for you. Most people I have worked with tell me how satisfying it is to be in the company of someone who only wants the best for them. It is true that some people feel more comfortable talking about things than others; however, I have much experience helping people feel comfortable and relaxed sharing their thoughts and feelings and I'm sure we can find a way of doing things that puts you at ease.

What should I prepare for my initial session?

I don't ask anyone to prepare formally for the initial session. Some people like to make a list of things they would like to talk about and we can discuss these things in the initial session.

Do you watch me compete?

Sometimes it is helpful to watch an athlete compete to help me understand the athlete's sport and competitive environment. The needs of each athlete are different so observing competitive events or training sessions depends on what we discuss during our sessions. Occasionally, some athletes have asked me to join them in the warm-up arena or practice ground before competing which is something I am happy to do.

Are our meetings confidential?

Everything you tell me in your sessions is confidential and will not be passed to anyone without your permission (unless it is a rare extreme risk situation which I will mention in our initial session). Sometimes it can be helpful to let your coach or manager know that you are working with me but this is also something we can discuss if we feel it is necessary.
